Long Hot Summer

The titles for a lot of my paintings often come from songs, and also the title for this blog which is a song by Glen Frey of Eagles fame, sadly now deceased. He was writing songs about climate change before it became “a thing”. In 1992 he released a solo album called “Strange Weather”, check it out! “Long Hot Summer” should have been the sound track to this crazy season we just had as well as being the title for one of my new paintings, coming up in my new exhibition. Painted before I knew what destiny had in mind for us. Maybe the paintings that came after that were a reaction to the heat, because they are completely different.

While working on paintings for my new exhibition I was inspired by two things, one was a holiday in Kefalonia, I saw paintings in deep, bright turquoise with swirls of gentle waves. The other inspiration was a series of paintings in subdued neutral colours, more representational. This would definitely be a departure for me, I don’t really do neutral, subdued colours, but I’d have a go. The resulting paintings are more Mablethorpe mud than Adriatic Sea, but I was pleased with the outcome. I have happy memories of family holidays in Mablethorpe as a child!

I will be sharing the space with two other local artists, Phil Bowman who runs his own gallery in Lincoln Gallery at Saint Martin’s, and Robbie Vashak. Robbie works with wood to create beautiful pieces which you can’t help but touch, and now he has added ceramics to his repertoire. Phil makes vibrant screen prints inspired by his many trips to Grenada in Spain and other travels.

It will be an interesting intersection of painting styles and wood combined with ceramics.
